Exploring Clerkenwell Design Week

CDW exterior

Clerkenwell Design Week (CDW) is one of the premier landmarks of any design-orientated Londoner’s year! Now in its 7th year, the always innovative show brought together hundreds of design brands and thousands of visitors, (attracting 34,000 visitors in 2016). In the heart of East London, UK, the CDW celebrates independent designers, inventive creations, and the spirit of innovation! We sent a NOXU Home delegation down to the exhibitions and events to see the fantastic pieces on display.

Though Clerkenwell Design Week is a relatively fresh-faced addition to the global design week scene, it is already carving a name for itself as an innovative rival to the slightly older London Design Festival. Based in the trendy East End of London, an area that has made a name for itself as a creative hub, CDW never fails to amaze with the variation of cutting-edge design on display.

CDW exhibit

The first thing our team noticed when starting to explore CDW is the intriguing new layout and visual identity of the exhibits and installations. The Farmiloe Building, a former Victorian merchant’s warehouse, has been the home of CDW for the last few years, however this year the organisers have taken a new strategy, spreading exhibits and installations across the area, from Spa Fields down to Farringdon. This was a bold move by the organisers, and one we think worked spectacularly well, it created more of a festival atmosphere as opposed to being pivoted around a central exhibition space; encouraging window exhibitions on the routes between venues and giving more of an eye-catching platform to independent and local designers. At NOXU Home we cherish independent designers and always look to feature their most upcoming and inventive designs, it was brilliant to see so many getting the attention they deserve!

As the NOXU Home team meandered along the pathway of design created for CDW, we were constantly struck by pockets of inspiration, everywhere you looked there were proud designers, keen to display and discuss their work. It was while moving between venues that we saw the fantastic BuzziJungle designed by Jonas Van Put from Buzzi Space. Inspired by nature, it’s a meeting space reinvented, designed to push traditional boundaries of any workspace, and one of the most prominent ‘CDW Presents’ installations this year. At NOXU Home we’re always looking for designers that reimagine concepts into beautiful modern pieces, have a look at our range for offices and workplaces and get inspired!

We were really pleased to spot PadHome while exploring the exhibits; PadHome is a London based furniture distributor that is always a pleasure to work with. Some of our favourite products are featured on NOXU Home thanks to PadHome, such as the environmentally-friendly Graypants lamps and LEFF Amsterdam‘s minimalist clock designs.

CDW Presents installation

The 2017 Clerkenwell Design Week was the first to feature a dedicated British Collection. There were also discussions on the future relationship between British designers and their European counterparts. At NOXU Home we’re really proud to feature the best independent designers from across Europe. It was great to see a great balance of designers at CDW, from those who are based five minutes down the road to as far away as Eastern Europe!

Clerkenwell Design Week never fails to amaze and inspire. It may have wrapped up for another year but it has left us with plenty to think about and discuss; the design world doesn’t end when the exhibitions and festivities of design weeks stop! We feature new designers throughout the year, designer furniture is made easy with NOXU Home!
